Did you know that October is “Energy Management Is a Family Affair Month”?

You and your family can do your part by practicing energy conservation together at home this heating season. Even the smallest children can learn to close the front door after they’ve come into the house or keep their toys from blocking the vents. You can even turn conserving energy into a game or song!

Here are four easy ways to conserve and save:

  1. When you are asleep or out of the house, turn your thermostat back 10° to 15° for eight hours to save up to 10% or more on your heating bills.
  2. Open curtains and blinds on your south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home, and close them at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows.
  3. Ensure furniture, rugs, curtains, and toys do not sit on top of floor grills or press against wall vents. and returns.
  4. Clean or change your furnace filter regularly during the winter (about every 4-6 weeks).

When it’s time to upgrade your heating system, you’ll want to purchase equipment carrying the ENERGY STAR® mark, which generally uses 20–30% less energy than required by federal standards. At SOC Energy/Service Oil Co, we install super-efficient boilers, furnaces, and water heaters; as well as geothermal systems and heat pumps — all from the top names in home comfort.
