It seems that the price of everything is going up these days – basic necessities and nonessentials alike. Many of our customers have asked us how they can save money on their heating oil or propane, and we have a few ideas we’d like to share with everyone.
-
Use a smart thermostat: Smart thermostats “learn” your household schedules. They reduce temperature when your house is usually empty or people are asleep, automatically raise it again so it’s back at your preferred temperature by the time you return or wake up (no more waking up to a freezing home), and can be controlled via an app on your smartphone.
-
Upgrade and/or maintain your heating system: Modern, highly efficient systems squeeze more energy from every drop of fuel you use. If upgrading is not in your budget right now, enrolling in one of Service Energy’s comprehensive service plans can ensure that your current boiler, furnace, or heat pump is operating as efficiently as possible.
-
Replace your furnace’s air filter: If you have a furnace, replacing the filter once a month helps assure the best airflow and efficiency.
-
Keep ductwork in good repair: This can be accomplished by sealing leaks with mastic, metal-backed tape. Your home could be losing up to 25 percent of its heated or cooled air before it reaches the vents.
-
Insulate your hot water tank: The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that you insulate the tank or water heater and the first six feet of hot water pipe.
By the way, not every energy-efficient change has to cost money! Here are five that won’t cost you a single penny:
-
Open blinds, shades, curtains and drapes during the daytime to let the sunshine warm your home, then close them at night.
-
Set your thermostat one or two degrees cooler than you normally would, and even lower at night.
-
Avoid heating rooms you’re not using. If your home has central heating, close doors to unused rooms. If you have radiator-based heating, in addition to closing doors to unused rooms, turn off the radiators in those rooms.
-
Remove air conditioning units from windows.
-
Close your kitchen vent, fireplace damper and closet doors when not in use.
