As a SOC Energy/Service Oil Company, you enjoy all the advantages of clean, efficient, reliable propane. And even though propane is a safe fuel to use inside and outside your home, like any fuel, there are precautions you should take when using it.
Since June is National Propane Safety month, we thought we’d address your top propane safety questions, with a little help from the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC).
Q. How do I know if I have a propane leak?
A. Propane’s distinctively unpleasant smell (an added odorant that smells like rotten eggs or a skunk’s spray) is just one of the safety features of your home’s propane system. Gas leaks can be dangerous, and your nose can help identify them!
Q. What should I do if I smell a leak?
A. If you smell a leak, take these steps:
-
Have everyone get outside and move away from the house.
-
Put out all smoking materials and open flames.
-
Do not operate lights, appliances or phones as those could create a spark or ignition source.
-
Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank – but only if it’s safe to do so.
-
To close the valve, turn it to the right, or clockwise.
-
If you have more than one tank, turn them all off.
-
-
Call 911 or SOC Energy/Service Oil Company right away from a neighbor’s house or another safe area. Do not return to your home or the affected area until a SOC Energy/Service Oil Company technician, an emergency responder or a qualified professional says it’s safe.
Q. How can ensure the safety of my propane equipment?
A. Before using any propane appliances, have a licensed, certified SOC Energy/Service Oil Company test your heating system.
Q. How can I use my propane grill safely?
A. Always grill outdoors, away from siding and overhangs. Check hoses and connections, keep the lid open when igniting, and never leave your grill unattended.
Q.I have more questions ... what should I do?
A. If you have any further questions about propane safety -- or about propane in general -- we are here to help! Call 717-564-1657 or contact us.
